From the viewpoint of Piazzale Giovanni Paolo II you can admire the Musone river valley , where the famous Battle of Castelfidardo (September, 18th 1860) between the pontificial army and the Piedmontese one took place. On the background you can see the Monte Conero.
Holy Staircase. Alongside the route there are 15 bronze niches representing the Misteries of the Rosary, made by Guarino Roscioli. The same artist realised the bronze statue of the Madonna of Loreto
to be found at the beginning of the climb. The pedestrian run joins the higher part of the town, situated on Monte Prodo, to the lower one, close to the train station.
City Wall. It was commissioned by Leo X in order to protect the city from Turks' attacks. It is characterized by two great circular bastions and two pentagonal ones (1518 - 1521).
You enter the city through the Porta Marina gate which was built between 1523 and 1534. In 1617-24 Giovanni Branca adorned it with elements derived from the demolition of the old cimitery.
On the first bastion you meet, you can visit the Rimembranza Park, built in 1926 in memory of the fallen soldiers. It's an excellent viewpoint where you can admire once again the Musone river valley and, on the other side, the impressive Basilica apse.
Walking along the way on the right, you take the Vicolo degli stemmi which is so called for the presence of several papal and bishops' coat of arms who make their mark in the Virgin Mary's city also in this way. You can see part of the ancient flooring.
